What was I saying?
I should probable keep it brief and simple. The old school "this is a fucking website" style. I... I really don't like the current state of the internet. I can guss that that's a popular sentiment around here. I distrust my ability to asess if it is a popular sentiment in general. But I digress, what to do here, then? Man, I don't know. For now I think I'll start one of those digital garden sorta things to share cool stuff that is STILL on the internet. And maybe add more hover effects to the homepage or whatever I feel like on a particular day. Today it's this, who knows about tomorrow
Anyway, can I interest you in...
Some random things I found in old Avon catalogs and just think are neat?
Why would I want to...?
- If you're into fashion, makeup, etc, looking at a big collection of catalogs through the decades is a great way to get a hold of trends evolution, comeback cycles, and all that fun stuff. It also provides a good framework for how past fashions really looked like.
- In a less fun but still important sort of way, it's also a great window into how beauty standards are enforced and how they evolve over time. Also gender roles. How the same imperatives get rebranded and recycled, how new ones emerge. Even, ocassionally, how one or two are challenged.
- If you happen to be into some nerdy niche field like packaging design, product photography, typography, editorial design, illustration for ads, and so on, you may have a field day
- Also, sometimes you just want to look at some neat things. There's lot of cute neat things on those catalogs. And maybe you have a little case of misplaced nostalgia, that counts too.
